Assignment 002_CWRK:Development Log Major Project

Building identity four: Cohesion in design

All these separate elements had to be brought together into the actual product design. I modelled a 250ml can in Maya and exported the UV mesh of the cylinder to create a 2D representation of the exterior walls of the can.

This was a highly iterative process between Maya and Photoshop as I assessed the layout of the can design and alternated between the two. Some elements worked well on a 2D plane but unfortunately did not translate well into 3D as the shape of the can is rather slender and elements I need to be out of view of one other would sometimes appear too close. An example of this issue is the placement of the illustrations and the artwork / name of the product next to the mandatory information that a product requires for sale in The United Kingdom (See https://bowers-2020.hulldesign.co.uk/2022/12/12/whats-on-the-can-an-exploration-of-language-and-iconography/ for additional information).

Each can was roughly split into thirds allowing for distinct areas.

  1. Name and illustration.
  2. Required information.
  3. Product brief.

As the separate elements were placed, I tiled the pattern from the previous blogposts to serve as a centre point and tiled one to the left and right of this, fortunately due to the size and scale of the designs they tessellated perfectly into themselves and allowed for the seamless design elements.

Each flavour uses a solid colour background with gradient made from the brand style guide secondary colour which eases the transition from top to bottom, unifying the designs across the board and creating a strong aesthetic.

Each can was rendered in Maya with an a slight metalness and roughness value applied (0.3 and 1.5 respectively) for the appearance of printed aluminium.

Underneath is the net for each of the four flavours along with their “flavour” text.
