Fireworks Test

At the start of the short film the protagonist “Jim” is stood watching fireworks from his window inside. I want to combine practical lighting effects and digital compositing for the shots in the short movie.

Using an RGB light outside the window will help cast the quick flashes of colour into the otherwise dark living room. In the testing phase I found a large frying pan sufficiently blocked out the light to create this effect.

The curved face of a pan helps to block out any light bleeding

There are two angles for these shots I want to use. The first is a static tripod shot offset towards the window. This will show the room is illuminated and cast a shadow from “Jim”

These are the two angles i will use.

The second shot is going to be trickier to obtain as I will need to layer the following on top of each other for the effect.

This window will be rotoscoped out when filming and replaced with a video of the night sky.
Experimentation with Particles in After Effects, changing velocity and particle types.
  • Standing in front of the window and having the light shone towards me to change the colour of the room and illuminate me.
  • Rotoscope out the window and mask myself into the shot.
  • Video footage of the night sky from as close to reality as possible.
  • Add firework effects generated in AE.
