This hammer was one of the first assets I created in Maya for this project and went through several design revisions. The first instance of the piece was a very generic looking hammer that didn’t fit the design style of all the other pieces.

I looked at a variety of pommels and decided to merge the oval and taper pommel into a single design.

I wanted the piece to look as if the bulk of the hammer was used frequently and due to this it would be aged and worn on the head and the shaft but the handle grip and the copper bindings would have to be replaced frequently. After revising the piece, I created the first proper instance of the asset.

However, I didn’t like how this piece looked overall. The wear levels on the hammer didn’t come across and looked as if it was created by a modern machine. For the second version I retained the leather material for the grip and the copper for the pommel / binding but replaced the main texture with steel rust to achieve the ideal look.
